Keeping Your Relationship Alive

How to Keep Your Relationship Alive

My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year. Yeah only a year. We live together already (you can keep your comments on that to yourself). But we both knew it was just right. He has no kids and I do. He came into this relationship knowing that dating & being with a full time mom was going to be challenging and stressful but let me just tell you he’s been so supportive and I love him more and more everyday for that.

My boys only see their dad every other weekend during the school year, so my boyfriend and I don’t get much of an alone time together. When we do we make the best of it.

Today I’m sharing with you some ways we keep our relationship alive. Keeping your relationship alive is very important in a relationship.

  1. Date nights = some people don’t know this but taking time is important. You get to enjoy dinner without any interruption of children and you get that alone time to focus on each other.
  2. Be game for anything = Play video games, try something new, or watching a movie together that you two haven’t seen (oldies are my favorite).
  3. Harry Potter Marathon = I don’t know about you guys but my boyfriend and I love having Harry Potter marathons lol
  4. Be supportive of one another = I get asked a lot if my boyfriend is supportive of me blogging and he is. I love that about him. He’s always encouraging me. Vise versa when he wants to do something.
  5. Game nights = grab a few drinks for the house and play some board or card games.
  6. Hangout with your friends = having that time with your friends is important. It gives you that time to have a ladies or guys night.
  7. Have a First Date = dress up and go to the place where you had your first date.

These are some of the things we love to do in order to keep this relationship going.

What do you and your significant other do to keep your relationship alive?

  • Harry Potter marathons YES!! haha I’ve tried to get Trevor into Harry Potter but he just doesn’t understand how awesome it is. That makes me really sad. Happy for you and Brian..you guys really seem to have a great, awesome relationship!

    • Thanks Chels. Brian & I have an amazing relationship. And i can’t believe Trevor doesn’t like Harry Potter. My heart broke. Lol

  • Shelby Bussard

This was really cute. I love doing new things to keep the sparks flying, even if it’s only something little like bringing home cookies. Thanks for sharing!

    • Thank you. He loves bringing me treats when I’m upset. lol

  • I think date night is so important! It’s a small thing to do, but definitely helps the spark stay lit.

  • Great post! My BF and I like to do “long-term” HP marathons if that makes sense. Since there are 8 movies, we basically watch one every weekend for 2 months take a break then start them all over again! πŸ™‚

    • If we can manage completing them in 1 weekend we will do it lol But otherwise thats what we do, spread them out. lol

  • I love these ideas!! My husband and I were trying to think of something fun to do while we’re cooped up with a newborn in November, and we decided that a Harry Potter marathon is definitely in order!

  • Natalie Slater

Such great ideas! I totally agree – life is busy, but you need to make an effort on having a relationship with your significant other. I actually just wrote a similar post yesterday that I am going to put up on my blog a little later this month on why my baby goes to bed early – so I can spend time with my husband. It is necessary! Thanks for sharing. πŸ™‚

    • My boys go to bed at 730 and we get to spend that time to watch our favorite shows together. So I’m happy knowing that were not the only ones that do that. πŸ™‚

  • Natalie Slater

And PS – we love Harry Potter! If you haven’t been to Harry Potter World yet – embrace the inner nerd and do it! It’s so fun!

    • That’s on our bucket list to do with my boys in the near future. πŸ™‚

  • ABudgetFriendlyLife

Great ideas! My husband and I like to have day dates together. For some reason, it is always easier for us to sneak away during the day.

  • Jen

These are really great tips. As hard as it was for my baby to go to school this year, it has given my husband and I more one on one time.

    • That’s awesome. As long as you spend that time together – that’s all that matters. πŸ™‚

  • Joanna Malefaki

    Lovely suggestions. I want a bf πŸ™‚

  • my husband would LOVE a harry potter marathon- would love. great ideas and i totally agree- this fall is so busy and we are trying to spend time together!

    • My boyfriend has all the movies so were always watching it lol

  • love these! we don’t have kids but its so easy to get bogged down in your every day life that you forget to continue dating! we’ve been married 5 months, but our secret is to keep dating each other. do romantic things, go on dates, act like you still have to pursue that person, not just because youre married or dating but because you want too!

  • Ariel Pingault

These are all super fun ideas! I moved in with my boyfriend after a little less than a year of dating (and 8 years of friendship), and 2 years later we’re still going strong! We love going on little weekend adventures together; apple picking, hiking, hunting down antiques and records, but I love the game night idea! We’re not big movie watchers, so this would be a nice way to switch up date night! πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing this post!

    • Doing nature stuff or anything outdoors is always good on a relationship πŸ™‚

  • Great tips! So Important to continue “dating” each other after you’re married or living together. It can get exhausting, but you definitely have to make the effort to keep it fun!

  • My favorite is be game for anything. I am so stubborn and it helps to have a partner who pulls you out of your comfort zone πŸ™‚

  • Great tips! I LOVE our Harry Potter marathons. They’re seriously the best ever. And there is nothing wrong with living together already! My husband and I fell in love, eloped, and moved in together all in a 6 month time period haha so I’m the last one to talk about other couples “moving too fast”. If it’s right, it’s right! πŸ™‚

    • Lol thanks for not judging πŸ™‚ Your heart & mind knows when things are right.

  • Dana Brillante-Peller

My husband (then-boyfriend) practically moved in within a month of us dating. He was living at his mom’s and I had my own place so we always would end up there. Slowly his socks and clothing took over my drawers and closet LOL.

    • Lol thats EXACTLY what happened with us. I had my own place and he was living with his mom, slowly but surely he was staying over every night, we bought some male essentials for him to keep at my place and then I basically said “you might as move in, you basically live here”.

  • Jennifer Walker

My now-husband and I lived together for several years before we got married, so no shade there. We do regular date nights and have get-togethers with friends twice a month, plus we always sit down and have dinner together, even if that’s really the only time we spend together that day due to our schedules and to-do lists.

  • Harry Potter Marathons?! Any man who loves a good Harry Potter marathon is definitely, 100%, without a doubt, a keeper! Such a great list Jasmine πŸ™‚

    • Thank you so much lol He’s such a nerd. Into comic books and all that fun stuff.

  • I love these ideas! We are going on a date for our anniversary this weekend and I am so excited! I am always down for a HP marathon! πŸ™‚

  • we don’t do enough date nights – we so need to take some of your tips on board, but with two little children it is hard.

  • Congratulations! May you have many more years of celebrating doing life together. Bless his heart and yours for being mutually supportive towards each other.

  • I love this! My husband and I always try to keep things fresh and exciting. Our favorite way is with a local event planning company that hosts monthly date nights for couples. It’s so fun and I honestly think they should expand to other cities.

  • Sarah Emily

I love all of these! We try to do a date night every other week! It definitely can get pushed to the back burner but we have to make it a priority!

  • I love every single one of these. Neither of us have kids, but we still struggle to find time to find date nights. I think they are so important though! And I love these ideas!

  • Aw. I love this post! Great tips. :3
My boyfriend and I have been together for two years this coming January and we make the effort to plan a date night every Wednesday.

Great list! I think the problem is people don’t try they just get in the habit of doing the same thing. I recently posted a article similar to this http://www.allthethingsido.com/20-date-ideas-to-grow-your-bond/ check it out. I’ve done Pirates of the Caribbean Marathons

  • I love these ideas. I am a believer on date nights wether is at home or out at a restaurant!

  • Jess Rey

These are great ideas! I love Harry Potter and my kids and I can watch it for days, put the mister into that mix and he falls asleep. Ha!

  • Katie Brown

This is a great list! Spending time together no matter how hectic life gets is so, so important.

  • jillconyers

Yes! Date night love at least once a month.

  • Date nights are so important! My boyfriend travels a lot of his job so we make the best of our time together when he is home. We have a lot of movie nights because we are both movie junkies. Great list!

  • I love this πŸ™‚ my boyfriend and I have been together a year and a half now! It’s all about keeping up the romance πŸ™‚

  • The most important thing every relationship should have is respect. And #4 is part of it. But then every detail in a relationship is special. πŸ™‚

    Cheryle | thedailywhim.com

  • I really like the idea of game night! and #4 is really important, my fiance is really supportive of my blog and YT channel. and I’m really supportive of his… fantasy football? lol

  • Being supportive is huge! My last boyfriend totally thought blogging was silly and made snide comments about it all the time. That was HUGE to me. Glad you and him know what’s right for you and everything is going well πŸ™‚

  • Definitely definitely definitely DATE NIGHT. With me being in school, I am working on homework almost every night. There are very few nights that Kaleb and I actually have to ourselves to focus on our relationship and catching up with each other. So, we set a date night a few months ago and it has helped us improve our communication skills so much more. This is the time where we set our phones aside, no talking to all the other people or playing on social media. That time is just for us. And it’s been so worth it.
