Makeup Mistakes

makeup mistakes

Makeup mistakes. Let’s be real we’ve all done something with our makeup that was a big no-no! I know I have. Throughout the years of learning how to apply makeup and looking back at my old pictures, I’m just like “yikes” when I see them.

Well today that’s what this post is all about and honestly I’m still seeing it around on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

1. Wearing the wrong foundation – okay ladies. This one is definitely still happening and I’m not sure why. Like if you’re going to Ulta they will help you find the perfect shade for your skin. Don’t assume that because you’re “tan” you need to get the tan color because it may NOT match your face. Trust me I’ve done it.

Advice: Ask for help at the stores or match it to your jaw line. Never on the back of your hand.

2. Not blending your eyeshadows -ugh you have no idea how many times I see this. It looks like shit (sorry to use that word) but it does.

3. Over drawing/coloring in the eyebrows – OH MY GOSH! OMG OMG! I can’t express this enough. Do NOT overdraw your eyebrows. Just don’t. I’m sorry but I judge people based on their eyebrows. I see girls that neglect their eyebrows by making them SUPER thin or making them SUPER thick.

Here are some makeup mistakes you might be doing. Click To Tweet

4. Wing Eyeliner – I know girls personally that can’t do their wing liner. I want to help them. I know that perfecting the wing liner is hard, trust me it took me 3 years to do so. But there are techniques to help you. Like using scotch tape or a card. I really like the scotch tape technique.

5. Not setting your concealer – I always get asked how I do my concealer and get it to not crease. Setting powder. I like to bake sometimes. Let the powder sit on my face before I brush it off.

6. Not priming your eyelids – when you don’t prime your eyelids, your eyeshadow doesn’t come through and it creases.

7. Using your hand to apply – don’t do this. It’s not going to apply your makeup good. Use brushes.

8. Using eyeliner to smoke out your under eye– I personally know someone who does this and it drives me crazy. Looks horrible. Use eyeshadow when you want to smoke out your lower lash.

So there you have it. These are SOME of the makeup mistakes I see and down below you can find some helpful youtube videos from my favorite beauty vloggers on their “Do’s & Don’ts”

  • I am a makeup minimalist. I use Bare Minerals powder and some mascara and call it good. This does remind me I need to wash my makeup brushes though!

  • These are some great tips, although I admit I occasionally do #8. I didn’t think it looked that different from when I use eyeshadow but I’ll re-evaluate next time.

  • Girl I agree with ALL of these. I’m no make up connesiour but I do know the rights and wrongs and it pains me when I see some og these things.

The overdrawn brows thing is becoming an epidemic – as if people actually LIKE that look. Nightmare. They look like Cruela De Vil.

  • Is it sad that I do all aside for my brows. Though I did pluck one of them and got side tracked and just realized a week later that I haven’t finished the other side. Sigh.

Guess this is why I’m always going through Beauty blogs. To be honest, I agree a brush is so much better to apply the makeup – I know this… but the artist in me is like… nah. Just use your fingers. It works well on paper maybe it will work well on me. NOPE!

Excellent tips, Jasmine. I’ll flounder in a world of beauty without your help or suggestions. Still in love with that Nude eye shadow palette on one of your previous posts. Getting that from Amazon sometime this coming week!!

  • This is awesome! Great tips! I used to do #7 until beauty blenders became a thing, than I started using them and brushes and would never go back! I, too, judge people based on their brows and I neither like them over-plucked nor do I like them too thick! Thanks for the links below your post – I will save them for later!

  • Jessica Bradshaw

I am so bad about using my hand and need to get better about brushes. Great tips. Your makeup always looks gorgeous!

  • Great tips! I definitely agree that using your fingers/hands to apply makeup does not look good. You’re never going to be able to get things to fully blend that way, which ends up making it look smeared on. I agree that eyebrows are such an important feature on the face!

These are great tips! I always learn so much about make up from you! I had no idea about setting your concealer. I knew about priming your eyelids but that is something i’ve let fall to the way side. Now that I know not to, i’ll be doing it again!

What a great post, I definitely think A LOT of people make these mistakes and it’s pretty terrible. I make them sometimes too when I’m in a rush, but shiiiit I got an excuse 😛 xx adaatude.com

  • haha I can’t do winged eyeliner. But, it makes your eyes look smaller anyway and that’s not a good look for me personally, so I guess it doesn’t matter that I can’t!

These are great tips! I never knew that about concealer. I rarely wear makeup but will remember these next time I apply it!

  • I’m all about the eyeshadow primer! Otherwise it just doesn’t even stay on, so what’s the point? And man are there some crazy eyebrows out there!

  • Belle Vie A Deux

Yes! Yes! Yes! To all of it. 🙂 Especially the blending, foundation and the brows. I did gold foil brows 2 years ago for NYCFW and that is where those crazy brows should stay! 😉

  • When in doubt, blend it out! Another great tip is to use a clean brush when blending as not to overdo it by making your eyeshadow heavy and patchy.

  • I agree! One thing that makes me really cringe is when I see a makeup look that is dated. I’ve seen people do pencil thin brows and thick black eyeliner and it always reminds me of like 2005 and before that. Everybody is still learning though so this is a good way for beginners to learn what not to do. I remember my makeup used to look god awful until I started watching youtube videos and reading blogs.

  • Sarah Emily

YAS! girl people that don’t blend their shadows kill me! I blend until my hand hurts haha. Love this!

  • Neely

YES YES YES! The overdone eyebrows need to stop!

  • I am not a big make up person but even I know these! Especially the foundation and eye brows!

Oh my goodness yes!!!! Would more people please take note!

  • I agree with all of this except the applying with your hands. Primer and depending on the foundation, normally sets better into the skin when warmed – even with just your own body heat by rubbing it in your hands. I typically only do that with primer though on clients. Too much product settles to quick when you do that with foundation.
