A while back I had written a post on how to keep your relationship alive and it was such a huge hit on my blog. But let’s talk about how to keep it healthy!
I want to share with you guys more lifestyle posts. I know that my blog is mainly beauty although I describe myself as a beauty + lifestyle blog. So today I’m going to share with you 8 Ways to Have a Healthy Relationship. I’ve seen (and been) in unhealthy relationships.
This is where I’m going, to be honest with you. My ex-husband and I were together for almost 8 years. Some of it was good (at the beginning) and some of it was bad. It was unhealthy, to say the least, so we both knew it was time for a change. When we got divorced I vowed to make sure that my next relationship was going to be a healthy one because I needed that for myself and the kids.
When I started to date Brian, I knew that this had to be my last relationship because let’s be honest here, home girl is almost 30! I wasn’t getting any younger that’s for sure. I told myself that things I did in my previous relationship I wasn’t going to do in this relationship. I was THAT girl if you want me to be honest. Controlling, jealous and bitchy. Yup! I said it. No shame. That’s who I was. So, of course, I didn’t want this relationship to be like my last one so I did some major changes. What kind of changes? 8 Ways to Have a Healthy Relationship
Communication – I am a firm believer of communication. If you can’t communicate with your partner then that relationship is DOOMED! Sorry, it’s the truth. If you can’t tell your partner how you’re feeling, what’s on your mind, how your day is going etc then you guys have nothing.
Respect – One hard lesson I learned! Respect one another no matter what they have done. I knew that if I wanted to be in a healthy relationship, we had to respect one another. You have to maintain respect for your partner’s feelings, heart, character, and trust! Never call them out of their name, never talk bad about them to others or threaten to do something when you’re not getting your way.
Compliments – We always compliment one another. Whether it’s “babe you look cute” or “I just love your smile”. Keep things flirty between the two. Remind yourself why you started to date that person.
Be Private – NOBODY NEEDS TO KNOW YOUR BUSINESS! Seriously I see this all the time on social media. I understand that sometimes people need to vent but don’t post every single thing that’s happening in your relationship on social media. I did that with my marriage and it didn’t help one bit. Compromise – Things will never go your way. That’s just how life is BUT it doesn’t mean that you have to do everything the other person says. Find the in between, settle for something that will make both of you happy and compromise!
Goals – Set goals for your relationship. Whether is going on vacation, saving money, future house, or possible wedding bells. Set those goals if you’re serious and accomplish them together.
Forget the Past – No matter what that person did in their previous relationships, give them the benefit of the doubt. Trust that they won’t do the same to you. Don’t bring up past relationships into your current relationship. Not good.
Love – Most importantly have love. Say it at least 2x a day (morning & night). Or send your partner a reminder in the middle of the day (or whenever) letting them know you love them.
