I personally have been learning more and more about my hair and what it needs. I am someone who loves to rock my hair naturally curly but I also love it when it’s straight. But sometimes straightening your hair when you have naturally curly hair can be damaging to your curls. In today’s post, I will share 4 tips that have helped me be able to embrace naturally curly hair plus enjoy it straight and products that have helped my curls stay intact.
How To Protect Your Natural Curls from Heat Damage
- USE a repairing hair mask weekly! Right before washing my hair I apply my favorite hair mask and leave it for about 30 mins. This is going to help repair any heat damage I may or may not have from using a styling tool that week.
- USE heat protector. I can’t express this enough. Not using a heat protector will damage your hair. Trust me, I learned my lesson. By not using a heat protector you are asking for your curls to get damaged.
- DO NOT USE your styling tool at the highest heat. I know it’s tempting but doesn’t. Know what temp is best for your hair! I’ll share a few styling tools that are great at preventing heat damage.
- DO NOT USE your styling tool everyday. I use mine 2x a week. The first day when styling and 2nd time when I want to curl it or touch up any pieces.

Hair Masks
Right before washing my hair, I love to use a hair mask. I personally love any of these hair masks I’ve mentioned in this blog post. But lately, I have been using my Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair, Pre-Shampoo Hair Mask from Prose, and the Verb Ghost Mask. Using a weekly hair mask is going to help repair any damage to your strands by providing them hydrations, shine, and nourishment.
Deep Conditioners
Using a deep conditioner 1-2x a month is a must! Deep conditioning helps prevent damage from heat and styling tools. And it helps to replace moisture and vital proteins in the hair shaft. As of right now, my favorite deep conditioners are Bounce Curl Deep Conditioner [use code: JASMINE10].
Heat Protectors
Using a heat protector is going to add a barrier between your hair styling tool and your hair, sealing moisture and fight off frizz. Another great benefit to using a heat protector is that it works to smooth the cuticle making your hair smooth and feel soft. A few of my favorites are Drybar Hot Toddy, Ouai Heat Protectant Spray, and Verb Ghost Prep Heat Protectant.
Styling Products
Now let’s talk about styling products. Personally me, when I use styling products I need to make sure that it’s going to help my hair with frizz, shine, and of course-smoothing the hair out. Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother Styling Cream is used right after I wash my hair when my hair is damp, I add this right after I apply my Verb Ghost Prep. Another good styling cream is the Redken Acidic Leave-In Styler. Texture spray is another favorite of mine to add when I use a curling iron and right now my go-to is the IGK Hair Beach Club Texture Spray. It will give you volume and holds your curls for days. A finishing product I love to add is the Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil. This is going to give your hair shine and smooth out those ends having using heat.
Dry Shampoo
When I do style my hair straight, I always use dry shampoo in between washes. This is going to help prolong my wash. I personally wash my hair once a week when I do style it straight. For my type of hair, I don’t have to start using dry shampoo usually until day 4+. Unless I am working out and I am sweating really bad. Then I use it on day 2+. Two of my current favorite dry shampoos are Verb Dry Shampoo & Vegamour Dry Shampoo.
