Once you get engaged it’s time to start looking for a photographer to do your engagement photos. I mean these are memories you are going to want to have in your home and for me, engagement photos are as precious as a wedding album. But when you book your appointment with your photographer to get your photos done, you want to make sure your makeup looks good in your photos.
Today I’m speaking to you as a makeup artist, not a blogger. I’ve worked with many clients in my area whether it’s for events, weddings, teen events etc, and when it comes especially to makeup that will be photographed professionally I like to ensure that I’m doing my best as a makeup artist. Here are some skincare and makeup tips whether you’re doing your own makeup or having it professionally done.
Skincare
Once you have scheduled your appointment for your engagement photos be sure to start prepping your skin. As a makeup artist, people assume that I can work miracles and honestly I can’t. No makeup artist can. If you don’t take care of your own skin how do you expect your makeup to come out looking flawless? Your makeup will turn out as good as it can get based on your skin routine.
Suggest using a good cleanser, avoid using products irritating products like products that contain retinol and use moisturizers. I recommend washing your face in the morning and night. Please be sure to remove your makeup at the end of the night.
Here are some of my suggestions for products:
Engagement Photo Makeup Tips
When you do your makeup (or if you decide to use a makeup artist) make sure you stick with natural or romantic makeup looks. You definitely don’t want to go all crazy with the eye look or have a harsh contour.
- For Foundation:
- Make sure you’re NOT using products that contain SPF.
- Please use a foundation that actually matches your skin tone.
- And be sure to choose an oil-free foundation.
- HD Foundations are best too.
- For Powders:
- Only use translucent powders and make sure it doesn’t give flashbacks.
- NO MINERAL POWDERS.
- For Blush:
- Avoid applying too much. Lightly pat or swirl your brush on to your cheeks and make sure you’re using colors that work well with your skin complexion.
- For Contour & Highlight:
- Don’t go harsh on the contour otherwise, it’s going to look terrible in photos and you don’t want that. You want to make sure your contour looks natural. Tip: I suggest using a lighter shade in your contour palette than you normally use for daily wear.
- LESS IS BEST when it comes to highlighting. As someone who loves highlight, I never apply so much to my clients face. I do a light application.
- For Eyes:
- Make sure you’re using an eye primer that is oil-free. Be sure to set it with powder so your eye makeup doesn’t move around.
- Stick to eyeshadow shades that are in the natural hues.
- I like to stay away from intense shimmers on my clients but if they want some I suggest making sure you’re not using shimmers that are so intense.
- If you’re doing a wing liner make sure to a simple or small wing, don’t go extreme. What I like to do is apply a black eyeshadow over the small wing and blend it out so it looks more natural.
- WATERPROOF! WATERPROOF! WATERPROOF!
- LASHES – If you decide to apply false lashes use lashes that are more natural looking.
- For Lips:
- It’s okay to use gloss over your lip color.
- Depending on the style of your shoot (ex: spring, fall, winter, summer) you can pretty much rock any color as long as is on the subtle side. I prefer to do nudes or pinky nudes on my clients unless they want a bold color.
Be sure when you’re doing your makeup that you are blending everything. Also be sure to set your makeup with setting spray.
If you decide to use a makeup artist, be sure to do a trial run with them before hiring them for your engagement photos (or wedding).
