We are going to be throwing it back to 9 years ago. I remember taking the pregnancy test on Memorial
Day and anxiously waiting to find out if we were expecting. When we saw that test turn “positive” my
heart dropped. I got pregnant at a very young age (at least for me it felt like it was young). At the time
my boy’s dad (my ex-husband) and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Being 19 and
pregnant, we were still living at our parent’s house. I remember telling my mom I was pregnant and she
told me immediately to schedule an appointment at my clinic to make sure I was pregnant.
We went for my appointment they did all the blood work to ensure I was pregnant and I was. Because I
was a new mom, my nurse was very helpful when it came to options for a doctor for me, which hospital
I was going to give birth at based on the doctor I selected which was SSM Health St. Mary’s, classes I can take for new moms, what to expect when you’re pregnant, and take a tour of the hospital.
When it came to selecting a hospital I knew I was going to be giving birth at SSM Health St. Mary’s. I just felt comfortable giving birth at this hospital.
Rylan’s Birth Story – SSM Health St. Mary’s
Fast forward to the day I woke up feeling some sharp pains. I didn’t know what contractions felt like because it was my first pregnancy. I remember going downstairs that day and telling my mom I wasn’t feeling good. She asked me what was wrong and I told her I was having some sharp pains which felt like cramps. That’s when she told me I could be having contractions. I was a week away from my due date, so she advised me to go to my doctor and have her check me out. I was able to see my doctor and she told me that I was definitely dilating which is why I was feeling cramps.
At the time my contractions were 30-45 minutes apart. So we did a lot of walking around because walking can help with the pains.Later that night at midnight, I couldn’t handle the pain anymore because they felt like they were getting closer in time. If you’re a mom you know what I mean by this. So we grabbed my hospital bag and went to SSM Health St. Mary’s hospital. Checked in and the nurses there were doing everything to ensure I was comfortable. Once morning came along they finally decided to admit me. They transferred me to their Family Birthing Suites. They gave me some medicine to help strengthen my contractions and broke my water.
I did the bathtub to help with the contractions before I decided to get the medication. It helped for a while and the nurse asked me if I wanted to continue being in the tub and I told her no, I wanted some medicine because at this point I was crying. I hated the pain I was in. She went and got the doctor, they gave me some medicine.
After 17.5 hours of being in labor and I only dilated 3cm something wasn’t right with Rylan. The umbilical cord was cutting his oxygen. The nurse called my doctor and they were rushing me into the surgery room for an emergency c-section.
My baby boy was born was at 5:45 pm. Even though I had a rough delivery with him, I was happy that the nurses at SSM Health St. Mary’s hospital were so helpful, caring and always attentive to me and Rylan.
